Stormwater runoff is rainwater that runs off of impervious and compacted surfaces and combines with debris and chemicals. It is a major source of nonpoint source pollution in our streams and water bodies. In its purest form, stormwater is just rainwater and can be used as a resource if controlled and captured properly in our natural and built environments.
A portion of the stormwater draining from this parking lot is directed to a vegetated infiltration facility.
Maintaining appropriate riparian vegetation around water bodies and stream channels can help reduce erosion, promote infiltration, and create important habitat for aquatic species.
The environmental impact of large commercial development can be reduced by incorporating stormwater best management practices such as green roofs, which can also increase the life of the roof and reduce HVAC costs.
The Montgomery County Planning Commission is hosting an evening workshop: “Stormwater Management Tools: Real-Life Solutions for a Resilient Community” and we hope you will join us. We are interested in learning what you feel the County could do to help you manage stormwater in your community. Municipal stormwater management is more than building vegetated swales and naturalized basins – it affects many aspects of municipal operations including land use, zoning, and facility management. This workshop will help attendees learn what tools are available from the County to assist municipal stormwater management efforts.
