Sustainability Plans in Montgomery County

Exciting things are happening in Cheltenham Township! The township has been working toward achieving many of the action items in the Cheltenham Township Sustainability Plan.  MCPC was the consultant for the plan, leading the public process and preparing the plan. Adopted by Cheltenham Township in March 2013, the plan was the first of its kind to be completed in Montgomery County and one of the first to be completed in Pennsylvania.

Cheltenham Township decided to initiate a township-wide planning effort to create a sustainability plan in response to the growing interest among citizens to explore ways to make the community more resilient and environmentally friendly. Residents, businesses, community groups, and organizations are all stakeholders in the plan, which seeks to create a united vision for a sustainable community, shared goals to achieve that vision, and a set of specific actions that the Cheltenham Township government can take to become a more sustainable community.

The township’s Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC) has taken a leadership role in the plan implementation process. The committee has worked toward achieving many of the action items from the plan, including an impressive public education campaign that was on display at the Arts in the Park Festival. The festival featured five Sustainable Cheltenham events, including the First Annual Sustainable Cheltenham Awards. This award recognizes residents, businesses, institutions, and schools who exemplify efforts toward meeting the 10 goals of the sustainability plan, focused on reducing energy, waste, and water; increasing mobility; ecological stewardship; healthy living; increasing our local economy; supporting sustainable development; and community engagement. The event also featured a bike to the park parade, crafts and learning fun, recycle arts project, and a sustainable showcase highlighting how the community is saving energy, water, optimizing waste disposal, teaching students and parents, gardening to feed others, and supporting the local economy. This event capped off an impressive first year for the Sustainable Cheltenham initiative.

Following the success of the Cheltenham plan, MCPC is preparing sustainability plans for the Borough of Collegeville and the Borough of Pottstown. The Collegeville plan is close to completion; the Pottstown plan is just beginning. Sustainability plans are part of MCPC's professional services offered through the
Montgomery County Community Assistance Program.
