State Benefits: Veteran Community Assistance

Emergency Assistance through Individual Grants

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and various non-profit organizations provide temporary financial assistance for the necessities of life (food, shelter, fuel, clothing) to assist honorably discharged Pennsylvania Veterans of any war or armed conflict, or surviving dependents of eligible veterans.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Pennsylvania residency - applicants must be a permanent and exclusive resident of Pennsylvania.  
  • Veterans must have an “other than dishonorable” service in the Armed Forces of the United States.
  • Applicants must have experienced a sudden or unexpected loss of income due to unforeseen events such as sickness, disability, involuntary loss of employment, or other cause beyond their control.

Employment Assistance

As a veteran, you bring certain talents and qualities that are often found missing in other groups, yet there are challenges. Translating military life experience into civilian skills is difficult. Luckily, being on time, grooming yourself, being attentive, anticipating actions, and a firm determined handshake put you above the rest. 

PA Careerlink has dedicated veterans, like yourself, standing by to assist you via their employment program. This program will help you exceed your civilian peers in all phases of a job search; provided you participate fully. Their office is located at 1855 New Hope St, Norristown, PA 19401, call 610-270-3429 to make an appointment.

Educational Gratuity

The state of Pennsylvania provides for educational gratuities for children of honorably discharged veterans who have been certified by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as having wartime service-connected disabilities rated as 100% permanent and total or children of veterans who have died of war service-connected disabilities. Applicants must bring their parent’s DD-214, VA award letter, and complete the necessary paperwork with a Veteran Service Officer. 

Eligibility Requirement

The gratuity is only available for dependent students in a Pennsylvania college or university.

Amputee and Paralyzed Veteran Pension

The Commonwealth provides for a pension of $150 per month to any honorably discharged resident veteran suffering an injury or disease resulting in the loss of use of two or more extremities. 

Eligibility Requirements

  • The veteran must be certified by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as having wartime service-connected disabilities rated as 100% permanent and total
  • Must have entered the military as a PA resident.

Blind (Vision Severely Impaired) Pension

The Commonwealth provides for a pension of $150 per month to any honorably discharged resident veteran suffering an injury or disease resulting blindness to the extent that he or she has 3/60 or 10/200 or less normal vision in the better eye, or includes circumstances where the widest diameter of the visual field of the better eye has contracted to an angular distance of not greater than 20 degrees.  The veteran must have entered the military as a PA resident.
