To ensure safety within the Montgomery County Justice Complex, sheriff’s office deputies and security personnel are tasked with monitoring the entrances to the Montgomery County Court House and the county administration building, One Montgomery Plaza. In 2018, nearly 6,400 items were confiscated at the four main entrance points to the complex, including; 261 guns; 2,832 knives, 818 containers of mace or pepper spray; and more than 2,100 other pieces of contraband. 


Transport


The MCSO transports the most prisoners of any Pennsylvania county sheriff’s departments outside of Philadelphia and Allegheny counties. In 2018 the transportation unit transferred a total of 13,168 prisoners, 67 percent of which were inter county transports, while 22 percent were out of county transports. The unit also transferred 999 state inmates and 265 other individuals to and from trial correctional facilities.

cIVIL


Ten members of the law enforcement staff and five administrative employees processed and served more than 20,000 civil court documents in 2018. Deputies served 18,271 documents, and the civil office served 2,720 documents.

GUN PERMITS

The gun permits division of the MCSO receives applications and issues licenses to carry firearms to applicants in the county. A total of 4,160 new carry licenses were issued in 2018, as well as 4,833 license renewals.

BOMB SQUAD

Serving in surrounding counties such as Bucks and Chester counties, the bomb squad of the MCSO has been ranked as the 25th busiest bomb squad unit in the nation. In 2018, the squad responded to 337 calls, including:

  • 8 explosion calls
  •  9 responses to threats of an explosive device
  • 73 calls for suspicious packages
  • 121 recovery operations

DETENTION

Inmates are transferred to and from the Montgomery County courthouse every day. In 2018, 9,589 inmates were transferred by the MSCO, 62% of which were brought to court hearings.

K9

The award winning K9 unit of the MCSO is comprised of three K9’s and handlers who responded to a total of 54 calls in 2018. The unit responded to a variety of tasks, such as 25 narcotics incidents and 15 tracking cases.
