Public Defender
About the Public Defender
The state constitution mandates the appointment of a public defender for each county. The public defender and his assistants are appointed by the Board of County Commissioners. All must be attorneys.

Juvenile Advocacy Unit
The Public Defender's Office's Juvenile Advocacy Unit represents children in all phases of dependency, delinquency, and Orphans' Court matters.

Public Defense
The office represents without charge each indigent person under arrest or charged with an indictable offense. If the defendant requests it or if the court orders it, the public defender counsels and defends the indigent person at every stage of the proceedings, and may prosecute any appeals.
