Beware of Scammers

Protect yourself against scammers.

Convincing con artists posing as sheriff’s deputies that attempt to scam taxpayers with intimidating phone calls demanding cash or personal information have been on the rise.

Scammers have been using sophisticated methods such as identifying themselves with titles and ranks, and leaving voice mail messages with “spoofing” caller ids, so that it matches the authenticity of a call from the Sheriff’s Office.   They claim that their victims owe money to the IRS or have a warrant for their arrest.  Victims are told to buy Green Dot Money Pak prepaid cards from local drugstores and to call the scammers back with the prepaid card numbers.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office never makes phone calls regarding IRS matters or collects personal information over the phone.  Never give personal information over the phone!

Impersonating a law enforcement officer is a serious crime.

If you have been the victim of a scam or have received calls from scammers, you should immediately call your local police department or the Montgomery County Detectives Bureau at 610-278-3368 for further investigation.
