Certification Challenge 2017

Firefighter I

The Montgomery County Fire Academy will offer two opportunities for candidates to challenge the Firefighter I written and practical tests:

Written Test – Wednesday, May 3, 2017 and Thursday, November 16, 2017 at 19:00 hours.
Practical Test – Sunday May 7, 2017 and Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 08:00 hours.

This is the written and practical challenge test for The Pennsylvania Voluntary Certification Program accredited by the National Board of Fire Service Professional Qualifications (NPQS) and the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC).

The Firefighter I written test has 100 multiple choice questions based on the NFPA 1001 Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications 2013 Edition. The passing grade for the written test is 70 percent.

The practical hands-on skill testing for Firefighter I has 12 skill stations that candidates must successfully complete. Candidates must successfully complete both the written and practical tests to be certified as Firefighter I.

Current Certification Candidate Handbooks, Applications, and Skill Sheets are available on the Pennsylvania State Fire Commissioners / Pennsylvania State Fire Academy web site under certification: www.osfc.state.pa.us.

Candidates can also obtain the appropriate Candidate Handbook and Application from Herbert D. Adams, Coordinator of Professional Standards, Montgomery County Fire Academy. You may contact Mr. Adams by email at hadams@montcopa.org. All fully completed applications with all required pre-requisite documents attached must be received three weeks prior to testing. You may mail or deliver the application and documents but Do Not Fax the application. The spring deadline is April 12, 2017 and the fall deadline is October 30, 2017. Mail the application with all required documents to the attention of Herbert D. Adams at Montgomery County Fire Academy, 1175 Conshohocken Road, Conshohocken, PA 19428. The completed Application can also be dropped off at the Montgomery County Fire Academy.

Candidates will also need to submit a completed “Student Registration Form” for the written test date. A second “Student Registration Form” must be included for the skills testing date.

Candidate Equipment/ Supplies Needed: Written Test - Bring #2 pencils. Practical Test - F.T.O.G. & S.C.B.A.

Testing Limit: Fire Fighter I – 10 candidates
Certificate(s) issued: Office of the State Fire Commissioner Certificate with a National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications number and a International Fire Service Accreditation Congress national number.

Cost: Firefighting I – Candidate In County Written Testing - $25.00 Skills Testing $150.00; Candidate out of County – Written Testing - $30.00 Skills Testing $175.00
